Artist Statement

Truth and Lice is an experimental video game about fascism and talking heads in which the player clicks on lice until they explode. There is no way to win the game.

It is inspired by cookie clicker style games, in which the user clicks on an icon over and over again to raise their score. I was introduced to this game by children in my “Video Game Design” class at REACH Art Studios in Lansing, MI.

However, in this game, there is no score. On screen, you see floating 3D models of lice and when you click on them, it makes a satisfying sound and they get larger until they pop and disappear. There is no way to remove all the lice, as they are designed to repopulate faster than your body can physically remove them. The background is glitched video footage of right wing protestors on a college campus in the United States. There is no way to exit the game - the only way to turn it off is to shut off your computer.
